From a young age, Leland Vittert - known as Lucky - showed signs of being different. He was slow to learn to talk, missed social cues, struggled at sports, and had difficulty relating to kids his own age, who always thought he was "weird". His unique behavior and inability to connect with his peers made him a frequent target for bullying and exclusion. Even his teachers couldn't find a way to interact with him and expressed frustration to his parents. When he was evaluated professionally, the experts didn't have a term for Leland's condition and settled on "social blindness." What they didn't have words to explain was that Leland was on the autism spectrum.
